We’re thrilled to announce a remarkable distinction for Trofeo Estate at the recent Young Guns of Wine awards!
In a recent feature by Young Gun of Wine, a panel of experts blind-tasted some of Australia’s best amphora reds, and Trofeo Estate has emerged with remarkable distinction. The selection showcased 17 exceptional wines, celebrating the ancient art of terracotta maturation that is currently experiencing a modern renaissance.
Among this elite group, Trofeo Estate asserted its dominance in the field of amphorae winemaking, with an impressive four of its vintages being chosen. This not only highlights the consistency and quality of their portfolio but also positions Trofeo as a leading producer in this specialised craft. The 2021 ‘The Chosen Few’ Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 ‘Single Block’ Amphora Pinot Noir, the 2021 ‘The Chosen Few’ Pinot Noir, and the 2020 ‘The Chosen Few’ Shiraz each received high praise for their complexity, elegance, and unique character derived from their terracotta vessels.
The 2021 Trofeo ‘The Chosen Few’ Cabernet Sauvignon particularly captivated the judges, with one panelist noting its “deep ruby colour…layers of aromas that keep changing the more you sniff,” and another describing it as “poised and polished, wedding density with delicacy in a satiny, middleweight frame.” Another judge found the wine “very well-made, ready to drink now,” a testament to its impeccable balance and craftsmanship. These accolades underscore the winery’s masterful approach to using amphorae, creating wines that are both compelling and an authentic expression of the Mornington Peninsula terroir.

Winemaker Richard Darby
The winemaking process, overseen by Richard Darby, is a delicate balance of tradition and innovation. While some fermentations occur directly in the amphorae, others begin in stainless steel tanks, allowing the team to respond to the specific needs of the fruit. A reliance on wild yeasts for most fermentations further enhances the wine’s connection to its terroir.
